  • An estimated 40,000 slaves escaped from Ohio through the underground railroad.

  • William Lloyd Garrison - published newspaper "The Liberator" which advocated strenuously for abolition of slavery.

  • Underground railroad - a network of railroads underground through which Northerners and abolitionists helped slaves escape from the south.
