Grade 3-4: Vocabulary Lesson for Thursday, Week 6

This week's theme is: Family Trees


Word List 6

  1. ancestor: a person from the past that is related to you
  2. source: the start or beginning
  3. century: a period of time that is 100 years long
  4. eager: wanting to take action or do something right now
  5. relatives: a person in your family

Thursday Activities

  1. Create your own crossword puzzle. Click on the link and scroll down to the bottom of the page. Enter your words and your clues (definition), then click "Create Crossword Now." A new web page will appear. You can put a title on your puzzle if you wish, then click "Create Crossword." Print this out and complete the puzzle. Insert the completed work in your vocabulary notebook.
  2. Word Scrambler - Click on the link and create your own word scrambler with your vocabulary words. Type in the number of words you wish to scramble and press the "next" button. You will see a sheet that has the answers for you. Press next again and print out the page. Complete it and put it in your notebook.
  3. Create a word cloud with this tool. Type in each vocabulary word. Also type in some synonyms and antonyms of each word. When you are finished, click "Go." See if you can match up the vocabulary word with its synonyms and antonyms.

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Sample sentences:

I have old letters from my ancestors.
The picture in the hall is of an ancestor of my mom's.

We traced our tree back to a source in Russia.
Once families leave a country and move to another, it may be difficult to find the source of your family tree.

I have a picture of my ancestor that is over a century old.
In the last century, a lot of my relatives moved to America.

I am eager to meet my cousins from Russia.
The girl was eager to get an email from her brother.

All of our relatives come to our house for Thanksgiving.
I like that my family has lots of relatives that live near me.
