Grade 5-6: Vocabulary Lesson for Thursday, Week 7

This week's theme is: U.S A.


Word List 7

  1. abundant: having plenty
  2. allegiance: loyalty for a country
  3. refuge: a place of safety
  4. innovation: newly made or improving something with creativity
  5. civic: relating to citizenship
  6. legislation: the act of making a law
  7. monarch: a person who is ruler of a kingdom or empire

Thursday Activities

  1. Worksheet Creator.- Type your vocabulary words in the left column and the definitions in the right column. There is room on this worksheet for 10 words. Think of other words you know and type the words and definitions in the blank lines to complete the list. Click on "Generate Worksheet" at the bottom. Your worksheet will be created. Print out your worksheet, then after completing, insert
  2. Create your own virtual word dice. Click on this link and then click on number "15". Highlight the text that is already there and then type in one of your words. When you have finished, click on the single die or double dice, depending on how many words you enter. Click on the dice to roll them. State the definition of the word you see!
  3. Click this link to go to the game.Find the antonym of these words. The exercises are grouped into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Be sure to have a dictionary handy!

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Soldiers pledge allegiance and take an oath for their country.

The man took refuge from the cold in a shelter.

It is our civic duty to pick up litter.
The mayor brought 3 civic dignitaries to the meeting.

The senator introduced the tax legislation to Congress.
Under the current legislation, running a red light is against the law.

Monarchs ruled England for centuries.
Prince Charles will be the next monarch of England.
