Grade 9-10: Vocabulary Lesson for Monday, Week 10

Word List 10

  1. formidable: arousing fear, dread, or alarm; inspiring awe, admiration, or wonder; difficult to undertake, surmount, or defeat
  2. haven: a harbor or anchorage; a port; a place of refuge or rest; a sanctuary
  3. hindrance: the act of hindering; the condition of being hindered; one that hinders; an impediment
  4. irascible: prone to outbursts of temper; easily angered; characterized by or resulting from anger
  5. lucrative: producing wealth; profitable
  6. plausible: seemingly or apparently valid, likely, or acceptable; credible; giving a deceptive impression of truth or reliability
  7. rebuke: to criticize or reprove sharply; reprimand; to check or repress

Monday Activities

  1. On Week One, we suggested you purchase a notebook. You will be keeping your weekly words, definitions and assignments in this notebook.
  2. Write the words and definitions in your vocabulary notebook.
  3. Create your own sentence using each word and write this in your vocabulary notebook. We have provided samples below to get you started.

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Sample sentences:

After battling the storm for hours we were all glad to see the sheltered cove, our haven for the night.
In the middle of the rough neighborhood, the day care center was a haven for stressed out children.

Television quite often proves to be a hindrance to a educational progress.

An irascible child can hinder the progress of an entire class.
Turning her back on the man Granny told us, "Don't mind him children, he's just an irascible old fool.^
