  1. In 1619, the first black Americans (20) land at Jamestown, Virginia.
  2. In 1834, slavery was abolished through out the British Empire.
  3. In 1873, the first cable car begins service in San Francisco, California.
  4. In 1903, the first "coast-to-coast" automobile trip (San Francisco -New York) was completed.
  5. In 1914, World War I begins as Germany declares war on Russia.
  6. In 1944, an uprising against the Nazi occupation broke out in the Warsaw Ghetto.
  7. In 1957, the United States and Canada create the North American Air Defense Command, known as NORAD.
  8. In 1961, amusement park lovers "head for the thrills" as Six Flags Over Texas, the first park in the Six Flags chain, opens
  9. In 1972, the first article exposing Watergate scandal was published in the Washington Post by Bernstein-Woodward.
  10. In 1981, the music network MTV premieres at 12:01 AM.
