- 1485 England's King Richard III was killed in the Battle of Bosworth Field, ending the War of the Roses.
- 1642 the English Civil War begins between supporters of King Charles I (royalists) and Oliver Cromwell (Roundheads)
- 1775 King George III proclaims that the American colonists are in open rebellion
- 1846 The United States annexed New Mexico
- 1851. The schooner America wins the trophy that will become the America's Cup by outracing the Aurora off the English coast.
- In 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt became the first United States chief executive to ride in an automobile.
- In 1910 Korea is annexed by Japan after 5 years as a protectorate
- 1950 Althea Gibson becomes the first African-American on U.S. tennis tour.
- 1956 President Dwight D. Eisenhower and Vice President Richard M. Nixon were nominated for second terms by the Republican National Convention in San Francisco.
- 1996 President Bill Clinton signed welfare legislation ending guaranteed cash payments to the poor and demanding work from recipients.
- 2003 Roy Moore, the chief justice of Alabama, is suspended for his refusal to obey a federal court order to remove his Ten Commandments monument from the rotunda of his local courthouse.
