- In 1848, the first women's rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, NY.
- In 1880, the San Francisco Public Library starts lending books.
- In 1933, for the first time, brothers on opposite teams homer in the same game. (Rick Ferrell of the Red Sox played against his brother Wes Ferrell of the Indians.)
- In 1950, the NY Yankees obtain their first black players, Elston Howard & Frank Barnes.
- In 1967, the first air conditioned NYC subway car (R-38 on the F line) was launched.
- In 1980, the 22nd modern Olympic games opens in Moscow, but US & others boycott.
- In 1985, Christa McAuliffe was chosen first school teacher to fly in a space shuttle.
