- In 1773, the British Parliament passed the Tea Act, which would lower the tax the East India Company paid to the British government.
- In 1812, the War of 1812 began, as the U.S. declared war on the British Empire. It went on for almost 3 years until the Treaty of Ghent was signed.
- In 1858, Charles Darwin published his "Origin of Species" after he discovered Alfred Wallace's research on Evolution had similar information.
- In 1873, Susan B. Anthony was fined $100 for trying to vote. Women weren't granted voting rights until 1920.
- In 1923, the first Checker Cab was produced by the Checker Manufacturing company in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
- In 1940, Winston Churchill gave his famous "This Was Their Finest Hour" speech to the House of Commons.
- In 1983, Sally Ride became the first female astronaut to go into space on the Challenger
- In 1999, the feature Disney Animated Film, Tarzan, was released.
- In 2000, Tiger Woods won the 100th U.S. Open in Pebble Beach, California.
- In 2009, NASA launched the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter/LCROSS probes to the Moon in order to search for signs of water near the moon's south pole.
