- In 1693, the first woman's magazine, titled "Ladies' Mercury," was published in London.
- In 1893, the New York Stock Exchange crashes, leading to the Panic of 1893 and a 4-year long depression.
- In 1895, the first electric U.S. passenger train opened between Washington D.C. and New York City. It was called the Royal Blue and ran until 1958.
- In 1922, the first Newberry Medal in Children's Literature was presented to Hendrik van Loon.
- In 1934, the Federal Savings and Loan Association was created.
- In 1955, the first automobile seatbelt legislation was enacted in Illinois.
- In 1967, the world's first ATM was installed in Enfield, England by Barclays Bank.
- In 1977, the Supreme Court rules laywers are allowed to advertise their services.
- In 1985, the infamous Route 66 was decertified, and most highway signs were removed.
- In 2008, Bill Gates resigns from Microsoft to focus on his foundation.
