1. In 1608, - John Smith, explorer, writer, and cartographer, is elected president of the Jamestown settlement.
2. 1776 - George Washington asks for a volunteer and Nathan Hale volunteers, becoming the first spy for the United States.
3. In 1846, Elias Howe patents his lockstitch sewing machine in New Hartford, Connecticut.
4. 1894 - London taxi driver George Smith is first person fined for driving an automobile while drunk.
5. In 1913, the first paved American coast-to-coast highway, the Lincoln Highway, opens.
6. In 1950, Joe DiMaggio becomes the first player to hit 3 home runs in one game at Griffith Stadium.
7. 1953 - Swanson sells it's 1st "TV dinner" consisting of a Thanksgiving meal of turkey, cornbread dressing, frozen peas and sweet potatoes.
8. In 1961, Mickey Mantle becomes the seventh player to hit 400 home runs.
9. in 1984, Sean O'Keefe, age 11, is youngest person to cycle across the United states in 24 days.
10. In 1990, Ellis Island reopens as a museum housed in the same building that the immigrants came through for 64 years.
