- In 1666, the Great Fire of London, which started on Sept. 2 at the bakery of Thomas Farriner (or Farynor) on Pudding Lane, ends, leaving 13,200 houses destroyed.
- In 1885, the first ever gasoline pump is delivered to a gasoline dealer in Indiana.
- In 1863, citizens assembled for a Bread revolt in Mobile, Alabama. Since the war had begun, prices had increased sevenfold, and the poor in the cities were unable to afford the necessities of life.
- In 1906,Brandbury Robinson, college football player for St. Louis University, made the first legal forward pass to Jack Schneider.
- 1955 - Fred Kaps becomes world champion magician. He was the only magician to become FISM (International Federation of Magic Societies) Grand Prix world champion three. times.
- In 1960, Cassius Clay captures Olympic light heavyweight gold medal, gaining international attention
- In 1960, Wilma Rudolph wins her 2nd gold medal at the Rome Summer Games.
- In 1970, the rainfall state record in Bug Point, Utah was made with an estimated 15 cm (6") of rainfall.
- In 1980, the world's longest auto tunnel, St. Gotthard Tunnel, opens in the Swiss Alps.
- In 1986, Whitney Houston wins the third MTV Video Music Awards for "How Will I Know".
