Grade 5-6: Vocabulary Lesson for Wednesday, Week 4

This week's theme is: Exercise


Word List 4

  1. pedestrian: going on foot, walking
  2. sluggish: loss of energy, alertness, or vigor;
  3. dedicate: to give your all for a purpose
  4. exert: to apply oneself to a lot of effort and energy
  5. jubilation: rejoice and celebration
  6. challenge: a demanding task that calls for a lot of effort
  7. crave: to desire and want something very much.

Wednesday Activities

  1. Mind Mapping - On a piece of paper, or on the computer in Word, draw a circle and write the vocabulary word inside the circle. Think of words that mean the same thing and put those in circles around the outside of the word drawing a line to connect the synonyms. You can find ideas for making word maps on the Internet by clicking on this link.
  2. Mind Games - Create a mind map with words that mean the opposite or antonyms. Use the thesaurus built into your word program to find more words that are antonyms. Or you can go to this on-line thesaurus. Click on the button in front of Thesaurus at the top of the page, then type your word into the white area.
  3. Go to this link to learn how to make a mind map in excel. Step by step directions guide you in completing this task. After you create your mind map in excel, make a mind map using your vocabulary words. Print this and put it inside your vocabulary notebook.

Use the daily activities to help you remember words that you learn each week. It is much easier to remember what the words mean if you do something with them and use them frequently in talking with your parents, family and friends.

Sample sentences:

The cars must be aware of the pedestrians crossing the road.
Cars should stay clear of pedestrian crossings.

I usually get sluggish after eating lunch.
The computer had a sluggish response when I tried to open too many windows.

The foundation was dedicated to helping sick children.
You must dedicate yourself to losing weight.

The coach tells us to exert ourselves while lifting weights.
She exerted herself for the swim race and won the medal!

He felt such jubilation when he finished the race.
When the whistle blew, the team who won broke out in jubiliation.

Are you up to the challenge of running the whole race?
The boxer challenged his opponent to a match.

When I diet, I always crave chocolate.
The lady had a craving for some ice cream so she stopped at Baskin Robbins.
