In this module you will modify the concept map which was created in the lesson on Using Outline View. If you can not locate your saved copy, download a concept map to work with.

Step 1. Open the forms_of_water concept map. If your map is in Outline view, change it to Diagram view.

Step 2. For this lesson you will be using the Inspiration Symbol Palette, shown below:

Basic Symbol Palette - If this palette is not on your screen while you are working in Inspiration there are two ways to bring it back, or hide it if you wish to.
1 - From the View menu select Symbol Palette
2 - If you are using a PC/Windows based computer, press the F8 key

Use this arrow to show the library categories. If you consider each palette view a page, there are 75 pages of Inspiration symbols. Some of the symbols in Inspiration 6 are photos, and some are animated images.

Expanded Symbol Palette

Step 3. Replacing an Inspiration oval with a symbol is a simple process. Your only difficulty will be selecting just the right symbol. Put your mouse pointer over the rain oval which is linked to the Liquid sub-point, click one time to select the oval. Move your mouse pointer to the symbol palette and click one time on the raining cloud symbol. Your plain vanilla oval changes to the raining cloud symbol.

Step 4. Continue the process until you have found appropriate symbols for all ovals on your forms_of_water concept map. Leave the Main Idea oval unchanged for a moment. Remember, if the symbol is larger than the oval, you will need to move items around on the page. Click on an oval, leave the mouse button depressed and drag the symbol to another location.

Step 5. Modifying an Oval - We are going to make four changes to the Main Idea oval; enlarge the oval, make the font size larger, change the background color of the oval and change the color of the line outlining the oval.

Step 6. Save your concept map. If you are doing this module for professional development credit, print a copy.
