  1. In 1776, a committee is appointed to write a Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress.
  2. In 1793, the first public zoological garden was opened in Paris called Jardin des Plantes zoo.
  3. In 1848, the first telegraph link between Chicago and New York City is established.
  4. In 1921, Babe Ruth becomes the all time HR champ with 120 home runs.
  5. In 1943, FDR becomes the first US president to visit a foreign country during wartime.
  6. In 1944, fifteen year old Joe Nuxhall of the Cincinnati Reds pitched his first major-league game.
  7. In 1971, under President Nixon, the White House announces the end of its 21-year embargo on trade with China.
  8. In 1977, James Earl Ray escaped from Brushy Mountain State Prison in Tennessee, but recaptured on June 13, 1977.
  9. In 1996, Intel releases the 200 mhz pentium chip.
  10. In 2003, the Spirit Rover is launched, beginning NASA's Mars Exploration Rover mission to gather data to help determine if life ever arose on Mars, characterize the climate of Mars, characterize the geology of Mars, and prepare for human exploration of Mars.
  11. Famous Birthdays: Judy Garland, actress and singer; Maurice Sendak, children's author and illustrator; Hattie McDaniel, actress (Gone with the Wind); William Gordon Harris, civil engineer; Guy Harwood, horse trainer.
