- In 1509, King Henry VIII marries, Catherine of Aragon, his first of six wives.
- In 1793, the first patent for a stove was issued to Robert Haeterick.
- In 1927, the first Distinguished Flying Cross was presented to Charles A. Lindberg.
- In 1930, William Beebe dives to a record-setting depth of 1,426 feet off the coast of Bermuda in a diving chamber called a bathysphere.
- In 1947, sugar rationing was ended by the U.S. government.
- In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. is arrested in Florida when trying to integrate restaurants in that state.
- In 1972, Hank Aaron tied the National League record for 14 grand-slam home runs in a career.
- In 1982, "ET the Extraterrestrial", the movie, was first shown.
- In 1985, Karen Ann Quinlan, a comatose patient, died at age 31. Her case led to a right-to-die court decision.
- In 1987, Margaret Thatcher becomes the first British Prime Minister in 160 years to win a third conscutive term.
